College Baseball Regional Previews: Fullerton, CA

Fullerton Regional

1. Cal State Fullerton Titans (42-14) vs 4. Utah Utes (26-29)
2. Georgia Southern Eagles (42-15) vs 3. Gonzaga Bulldogs (35-16)

Winner to take on champion of Louisville Regional.

Some people think this is one of the weaker regionals and that the #2 overall seed Cal State Fullerton should waltz right through it, but don’t underestimate the other squads that will try to keep the Titans from advancing.

The Titans are built around their pitching. They have the fourth lowest ERA in the nation, and they are able to accomplish that due to their ability to minimize baserunners. They are Top 10 in both hits per 9 innings and walks per 9 led by Noe Ramirez (7-1, 2.93 ERA) and All-American Daniel Renken (9-2, 2.50 ERA), who have combined to throw 193 innings but have only allowed 196 walks and hits for an extremely low 1.02 WHIP.

Renken’s All-American award extends Fullerton’s streak to 12 consecutive seasons with an All-American pitcher. While they aren’t known for having any big boppers, the lineup does all the little things to win.

College Baseball Regional Previews: Fort Worth, TX

Fort Worth Regional

1. Texas Christian Horned Frogs (36-16) vs 4. Wright State Raiders (33-28)
2. Oregon State Beavers (35-17) vs 3. Texas A&M Aggies (36-22)

Winner to take on champion of Austin Regional.

One of the three regionals hosted by the lone star state can be found at the home of the Horned Frogs of TCU. As the host of the regional with a record of 36-16, TCU hopes their balanced attack will aid their escape to next week’s Super Regional where they could potentially face off with in-state rival Texas.

Standing in the way of the TCU advance are the arms of Texas A&M and Oregon State, and the big bats of Wright State. Although TCU should advance just as their #1 overall seed counterpart, TCU will have a much tougher test in the initial round.

C’mon ESPN, Use Some Sense

Throughout this year’s college football bowl season, I have enjoyed being off work, spending time with friends and family, and watching plenty of bowl games on the ESPN family of networks.

The TCU-Boise game was a great display of competition, as well as the highlight reel catches in the North Carolina and West “By God” Virginia game. However, there is one thing that continually disturbs me through these early bowl games.

The Blue Workhorse Week 15 College Football Top 25

There was a great competitive matchup for the SEC title and then there was a blowout where the opposition never even looked prepared for the Big XII title.

The winners, Florida & Oklahoma, of these games will now faceoff for the right to be crowned the BCS national champion.

Another week means another re-evaluation, and thus, we give you our new The Blue Workhorse College Football Top 25 after Week 14. Some things to note from this week’s rankings:

The Blue Workhorse Week 14 College Football Top 25

Oklahoma won impressively yet again, and it was just enough to bump them past Texas and into the Big XII championship game. With a win, they appear to be destined for the national championship against the winner of the SEC championship game. Too bad Texas can’t replace Missouri in the championship game. Now that would make for an entertaining championship weekend.

The Blue Workhorse Week 13 College Football Top 25

Is Sam Bradford still throwing touchdowns? Because that seemed to be the only thing he could do on Saturday night. Oklahoma’s dominating performance against Texas Tech shakes up our rankings a bit and makes the BCS even more confusing.

College Football Predictions: Week 13 (Part II)

Earlier this week in Part I, I gave you my predictions for some big time conference matchups on Wednesday and Thursday nights. I was right about Ball State remaining undefeated, but I was shocked by the performance of Georgia Tech last night.

The Ramblin’ Wreck absolutely destroyed Miami with their triple option attack as they piled up 472 rushing yards…yea, 472 rushing yards! I should have known better than to take an ACC squad their first week entering the Top 25, but I was completely unprepared for Miami’s inability to play assignment football.

No problems, though, as I am completely prepared to predict the rest of Week 13’s dynamite college football games:

The Blue Workhorse Week 12 College Football Top 25

While their weren’t any true marquee games this week, Oregon State did beat Cal positioning themselves even further for the Pac-10 title. Coach Mike Riley has quietly put together a solid season after the Beavers started terribly slow.

In other conference races: no one wants to win the ACC; the Big 10 is Penn State’s to lose; the SEC & WAC races are already over; and the Big East, Mountain West, MAC, Sun Belt, and Big XII could be all but determined this weekend.

Congrats to Rosenblogger and his Vanderbilt Commodores as they have become bowl eligible for the first time in his lifetime. Bobby Johnson is a great coach who wins the right way, and we applaud his accomplishment.
