Year End Recap: Rays, Superman, SEC & Fake News

Since we went live on January 22, we’ve learned the blogging ropes, met a lot of cool people, have had a small bit of success, and have hopefully spread some insight and knowledge along the way.

So you have what this season has brought, and now I’ll take you through the top 10 most popular posts (in chronological order) on this site from the year that was 2008:

Sunday Sports Selections: Playmakers DVD

In the Sunday Sports Selection series, we showcase a sports-related product (gadget, book, film, equipment, etc.) that we have enjoyed and think you may find of interest as well.

In 2003, the top sports network in the world, ESPN, tried their hand at producing a scripted drama. The result — an instant hit.

With cutting and brash stroylines, an incredible theme track (that I even personally used as my plate music my freshman year of college baseball), and realistic football scenes, ESPN’s Playmakers jumped onto the scene in 2003 and instantly was getting rave reviews.

Sunday Sports Selections: Yankee Stadium Commemorative Shirt

In the Sunday Sports Selection series, we showcase a sports-related product (gadget, book, film, equipment, etc.) that we have enjoyed and think you may find of interest as well.

In honor of the final home games that were played in historic Yankee Stadium, this week’s Sunday Sports Selection is something that we obtained on our trip to New York City earlier this summer.

While we were in New York for our weekend at Yankee Stadium, we wanted to get souvenirs from our trip as every tourist on a trip wants to do. But we weren’t looking for a “I Heart NY” shirt or a miniture Statue of Liberty. No, the main attraction of our trip was Yankee Stadium, so we were intent on getting souvenirs that were Yankees related.

Sunday Sports Selections: StatBeast

In the Sunday Sports Selection series, we showcase a sports-related product (gadget, book, film, equipment, etc.) that we have enjoyed and think you may find of interest as well.

I receive e-mails occasionally from sports companies that are either interested in advertisements or having us promote their products or web site. I typically will at least give the company or web site a look over to determine if they have anything that is of interest for our web site or our readers.

Earlier today, I received an e-mail from a representative of a company by the name of StatBeast (www.statbeast.com).

According to their web site, StatBeast, founded in February of last year, is “The World Leader in Online Sports Statistics.” They are a relatively new web site that offers interactive stat content for web sites and blogs. They offer a variety of widgets and other data tools, which are readily available for usage.

Sunday Sports Selections: NCAA Football 09

In the Sunday Sports Selection series, we showcase a sports-related product (gadget, book, film, equipment, etc.) that we have enjoyed and think you may find of interest as well.

I anxiously await its arrival every year. Once I start seeing the advertisements pop up, the my anticipations begin to mount. I’m, of course, referring to the newest version of the NCAA Football gaming franchise produced by EA Sports.

In my opinion, EA Sports is the premier producer of sports-related video games. From the Madden NFL franchise to NBA Live to NASCAR to boxing to FIFA, Electronic Arts is the leader in the video gaming world, and as far as college football, they own the monopoly being the company with exclusive licenses with the NCAA.

Sunday Sports Selections: The Legend of Bagger Vance

In the Sunday Sports Selection series, we showcase a sports-related product (gadget, book, film, equipment, etc.) that we have enjoyed and think you may find of interest as well.

Before he was Ali, before he was Hitch, before he was Hancock, and before he battled robots, sharks, and aliens for the last time, Will Smith was a mysterious golf caddy by the name of Bagger Vance.

Bagger Vance came out of the middle of the night to help local Savannah golfer Rannulph Junuh (Matt Damon) find his game and play in a two-day tournament against all-time golf greats Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen in the 2000 movie The Legend of Bagger Vance.

Sunday Sports Selections: Be Inspired by Saint Ralph

In Bull Durham, Annie Savoy talked about the religion of baseball, and some people equate sports fanaticism to being a religion. However, besides on the occasion of an athlete thanking God, it is rare sports and religion are discussed together.

Even in the movies, the two topics rarely are brought together. The one exception may be the film Saint Ralph.

Saint Ralph is the tale of a young 9th grade Catholic boy, who isn’t exactly your ideal choir boy.

Sunday Sports Selections: Stars & Stripes Hats

In honor of Independence Day, our selection for this week is a product Major League Baseball showcased the entire holiday weekend.

You may have noticed or even thrown back when flipping to Sportcenter to see teams such as the Oakland A’s or Houston Astros sporting blue baseball caps even though they have no blue in their team colors. What you were seeing was Major League Baseball’s attempt to honor our country.
