2008 College Hoops Preseason Top 25 Quick Guide

The college basketball season started last week, but it gets going full speed today with ESPN’s first annual College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon, which technically started last night when Memphis took down UMass 80-58 in a game that started at midnight (Eastern Time at least).

College Football Predictions: Week 12

I didn’t have my best showing last week, but I’m bound to rebound with authority this week. Unfortunately, there aren’t any true blockbuster games like there have been almost every weekend for the past month or so.

Nonetheless, there still are some intriguing matchups this week.

So what kind of predictions do I have this week? Probably not any good ones, but here they are:

(all rankings from are from The Blue Workhorse College Football Top 25)

#23 South Carolina at #3 Florida

The Blue Workhorse Week 5 College Football Top 25

Last week, almost every favorite won. This week…college football became a world of upsets.

The craziest part: besides Georgia’s loss to Alabama, the six other upsets were all by teams outside the Top 25! Who would’ve expected an Oregon State squad that lost to Stanford and was hammered by Penn State to upend USC or Wisconsin to blow a 19-point lead to a Michigan squad that hasn’t had an offense all season?

Another week means another re-evalution, and thus, we give you our new The Blue Workhorse College Football Top 25 after Week 5. Some things to note from this week’s rankings:

* With all of the upsets, there is not a single team that is in the same position as last week.
* After a week hiatus, Oregon and Fresno State return to the Top 25.

Week 3 College Football Observations

Every Saturday, after a hard week’s work, I just want to be able to sit on the couch and flip back and forth through college football games for the entirety of the day. Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to be able to do so.

I watched several games that were televised throughout the day on Saturday (as well as Friday night’s game), and unlike last week there were some big matchups and some true battles. Here are my observations about certain players and teams from the games I was able to see:
Kansas v South Florida (USF 37, KU 34)

* South Florida cornerback Jerome Murphy missed multiple tackles because all he was concerned with was loading up and using the hit stick on ball carriers. He made a couple of good hits but the few “Ooohh”s he’ll get in the film room won’t make up for the coaches’ yelling that is due him for his missed tackles.

The Blue Workhorse Preseason NCAA Rankings

The college football season officially starts tonight. North Carolina State will be taking on The Old Ball Coach Steve Spurrier and his South Carolina Gamecocks; Oregon State opens with Pac-10 conference for Stanford; and the first ranked team, Wake Forest, will play as well.

But before the season gets under way, we give you the official Top 25 from The Blue Workhorse, and later, we will give you our predictions for conference champions, the Heisman trophy winner, and maybe even a surprise team or two that may be flying under the radar now only to be clearly on the BCS scene at the end of the season.

Just as the ESPN or USA Today polls are compiled, we’ve polled our 4 top college football writers and given each vote a point value (#1 ranking = 25 points, #2 ranking = 24 points ….. #24 ranking = 2 points, #25 ranking = 1 point). We then tallied all of the points and tabulated the top 25 teams.

We’ve got the national powerhouses, the contenders, the possible BCS spoilers, and 25 teams that each want to hoist the glass football at the end of the season, so welcome to the first edition of The Blue Workhorse’s weekly NCAA football rankings.

Sudden Death Monday

Starting at 4 o’clock today, 12 college baseball teams will attempt to stave off elimination and extend their seasons for at least one more week.

While Miami, Arizona, North Carolina State, Wichita State, North Carolina, Coastal Carolina, UC-Irvine, LSU, Rice, and Arizona State have already solidified their spot in next weekend’s Super Regionals, today there will be 12 other squads fighting to join them.

Coaches will have to make tough decisions as almost every team is running low of quality arms at this point in a regional tournament. One of the biggest decisions is whether or not to bring back the ace of the staff on only two days rest, especially if you are a team such as the San Diego Toreros or the Tulane Green Wave, who have two of the top starters in college baseball (and two first round draft picks) in Brian Matusz and Shooter Hunt.
