College Baseball Super Regional Preview: Oxford, MS

Schedule/Results:

* Game 1: Friday 2 PM EST (ESPN2)
* Game 2: Saturday noon EST (ESPN2)
* Game 3: (if necessary) Sunday 3 PM EST (ESPN)

Oxford Super Regional

Ole Miss (43-18) vs. Virginia (46-12-1)

Mississippi Rebels
Road to the Super Regional: Beginning the season ranked in the Top 10 and finishing likewise, along with a 20-10 SEC record, the Rebels were named regular season Co-Champions with LSU. However, as the SEC Tournament’s #3 seed they were sent home early after being ousted in two games. Ole Miss made sure the same did not happen when they hosted the Oxford Regional winning easily over Monmouth (8-1) and Western Kentucky (7-4) in their first two games. After leading 9-3 in the Regional finals, the Rebels watched as Western Kentucky took a dramatic victory hitting 3 home runs and scoring 7 runs in the final two innings, inlcuding 6 runs off closer Jake Morgan before he was pulled without recording an out. But in Monday’s elimination game, Drew Pomeranz was nearly unhittable throwing a complete game two-hitter on only two days rest! He struck out 16 to tie an Ole Miss record and send the Rebelsto the Supers.

Big 12 South Arrested & Charged with Fraud

All we heard about this college football season was the gunslingers from the West and the high-powered, high-oiled Big 12 South offensive machines. Choke-lahoma regularly scoring 40 in the first half, the resurgence of Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and the “Air Raid”, Texas and Colt McCoy putting up massive numbers.

Every Saturday night (it seemed), we had to watch each installment of the Big 12 South showdowns. Brent Musberger roaring about the offensive proficiency and how good these teams seemed to be. This season was the Big 12’s moment. This was their time to shine….

Until the bowl season came upon us.

The Blue Workhorse’s Heisman Votes

Last Saturday, Sam Bradford was honored with the prestigious Heisman Trophy after being named the most outstanding player in the regular season of college football this season.

Bradford’s winnings came on the heels of the announcement of Tim Tebow’s historic win in the first annual Sports Blog Hesiman Trophy. For the Sports Blog Heisman Trophy, we e-mailed many, many bloggers asking them to give us their Heisman ballots, several of which did.

We also gave our votes, and I’d be remiss as this site’s editor if I didn’t broadcast these selections (in alphabetical order):

The Blue Workhorse Week 15 College Football Top 25

There was a great competitive matchup for the SEC title and then there was a blowout where the opposition never even looked prepared for the Big XII title.

The winners, Florida & Oklahoma, of these games will now faceoff for the right to be crowned the BCS national champion.

Another week means another re-evaluation, and thus, we give you our new The Blue Workhorse College Football Top 25 after Week 14. Some things to note from this week’s rankings:

The Blue Workhorse Week 14 College Football Top 25

Oklahoma won impressively yet again, and it was just enough to bump them past Texas and into the Big XII championship game. With a win, they appear to be destined for the national championship against the winner of the SEC championship game. Too bad Texas can’t replace Missouri in the championship game. Now that would make for an entertaining championship weekend.

Another week means another re-evaluation, and thus, we give you our new The Blue Workhorse College Football Top 25 after Week 13. Some things to note from this week’s rankings:

Thoughts on Lane Kiffin & Tennessee Football

It was announced on Black Friday former USC offensive coordinator and Oakland Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin will take over the reins at the University of Tennessee for the departing Philip Fulmer.

Even though I was not shocked at the announcement, I was rather suprised that Mike Hamilton settled on Kiffin, making him the youngest coach in major college football. In terms of success, all we know about Kiffin is that he was the co-offensive coordinator at USC with Steve Sarkisian, where the offenses posted great numbers in 2005 and 2006, with the likes of NFL talent like Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, Lendale White, Dewayne Jarrett, and Steve Smith.

Al Davis then took a gamble on the young Kiffin, naming him the youngest coach in the history of the National Football League when he led the 2007 Oakland Raiders to a 4-12 season, and was 1-3 at the time of his firing this season.

Now, that we know a little about who Lane Kiffin is, let’s examine his hiring:

Tennessee Football Heading Down Wrong Rebuilding Lane

There is nothing for Tennessee fans to be thankful for if the rumor regarding former Raiders’ head coach Lane Kiffin being offered the head coaching job at the university is true.

Of course, Mike Hamilton will not announce this decision officially while the administration tries to send current coach, Phillip Fulmer, out the door as gracefully as possible this Saturday against Kentucky. However, I believe the decision that appears to have been made is the wrong one for Tennessee football.
