Superbowl XLII: A Patriots Fan’s Road to Recovery
I am aware the Superbowl has been said and done for nearly two weeks now, but as a proud Patriots’ fan, I am just now beginning to grasp what has happened.
I watched the game with several of my friends, and, of course, every one of them was pulling against my Patriots, and through the vast majority of the game, I sat in a very calm and confident manner on the couch fully expecting to see the Pats win Superbowl #4, continuing the dynasty.
I mean, they had won the last eighteen games in a row, and after a while, certain things are expected. I am very superstitious, so I never guaranteed anything before the game, but in all truth, losing never really crossed my mind.
They are the Patriots, and the Patriots win, period, but as I think more about it, the signs of Armageddon were everywhere…
- This first sign has nothing to do with the Patriots, and really, not even football at all. I am a diehard fan, and I live and die with my team, but the day of the Superbowl, I did not even get nervous. I get nervous before every game, but all I had heard was how guaranteed this win was, so, naturally, I bought into all of the analysts’ talk (what a poor decision…I even listened to Sean Salisbury…what a joke).
When I watched the game, it was just to see the completion of perfection, not to watch the Patriots complete the most useless season in the history of professional sports. The team did the one and only thing that could not happen, let the one and only loss happen in the big one. I should have know the Patriots were going to receive exactly what they did to the Rams in 2001, but I was blinded by the false confidence produced by Tom Brady and 18-0. - Bill Belichick decided for some reason, even unknown to God, decided to wear a different sweatshirt than the one he has worn for the last, oh let’s see, 5 years! Are you kidding me, what was he thinking? You can’t just change sweatshirts when the one has worked perfectly during a season where your team is striving for NFL history. My heart skipped a beat when I seen Coach Belichick standing on the sideline with a BRIGHT red sweatshirt that. It was like he was tempting God for no reason. This was undoubtedly the worst decision in his career, and if he ever wears that sweatshirt again, let the good Lord strike him down immediately. {ed. note: As The Pete noted, Belichick looked like a middle-aged lesbian with a sweatshirt cut for the movie Flashdance}
- All season the Patriots were questioned about the ’72 Dolphins and their pursuit to perfection, but not one time did they fold and talk about it to the media, until the week of Superbwl XLII. I heard on numerous occasions, players like Tom Brady and Mike Vrabel talk about how they had come so far and perfection was merely one more step away. The Patriots do not do this kind of stuff, do they? The team eats “humble pie” and thinks about nothing but the game ahead, not what it is going to feel like to be perfect. Why did they change so much so fast? Keep your mouth shut, play the game, beat the hapless Giants, and then you can utter the word P-E-R-F-E-C-T-I-O-N all you want.
It has taken me nearly two weeks to come to these conclusions, and as far out as they may seem, I believe them. I will never forget filling the shot of anguish rip through my body when the clock hit triple zero, it was Hell.
I have lived a damn good life, and I can honestly say that game was the most disappointing moment of my life.
When I woke up the next morning, I got up out of bed to take a shower, and after about two steps toward the bathroom, it hit me they had lost, and I had to sit down to take it all in. I am still in the stages of denial, and I suspect I will be for at least another month, but there is always next year, and hopefully my beloved Pats will lose their first game of the season, so the team can forget about perfection and focus on trying to make up for the worst season EVER!

You want to know what the most disgusting part of the super bowl was for me? Terry Bradshaw talking about how Tom Brady might be the best QB ever in the pre game show. Here’s the thing, he might have already been numb to the fact that Joe Montana is the best QB ever, but he still is a better QB in history then Tom Brady is.
The second most disgusting thing, Randy Moss saying Jerry Rice USED to be the best WR ever. How many rings does Moss have? Zero??? Right….
Also, i feel bad because you obviously love your team, and did not try to make excuses. There is though, the people who are fans of 18-1 teams (49ers, Bears) that love the fact that the patriots aren’t the best team ever, they are not even the best 18-1 team ever.
My 49ers went 5-11 this year, lost their 7th overall pick in the NFL draft to New England, but still wind up in the same place as them. To me that is justice sir, but beleive me. Your patriots went 18-1, that is 18 games you got to love sir. I only got to love 5 games this year. Keep your head up, your cheating patriots will be figured out by next season.
