The Blue Workhorse Week 5 College Football Top 25
Last week, almost every favorite won. This week…college football became a world of upsets.
The craziest part: besides Georgia’s loss to Alabama, the six other upsets were all by teams outside the Top 25! Who would’ve expected an Oregon State squad that lost to Stanford and was hammered by Penn State to upend USC or Wisconsin to blow a 19-point lead to a Michigan squad that hasn’t had an offense all season?
Another week means another re-evalution, and thus, we give you our new The Blue Workhorse College Football Top 25 after Week 5. Some things to note from this week’s rankings:
- With all of the upsets, there is not a single team that is in the same position as last week.
- After a week hiatus, Oregon and Fresno State return to the Top 25.
- Moving into the Top 25 for the first time is 4-0 Kentucky. A win against #2 Alabama would fully propel them onto the national scene.
- Biggest gainer: Alabama got a huge win that moved them up 7 spots to #2. However, the biggest leap forward comes from Penn State. The Nittany Lions are finally getting everyone’s attention after defeating a good Illionis squad and everyone saw one of the teams they manhandled previously (Oregon State) upset USC.
- Biggest loser: After losses Illinois and Clemson drop out of the Top 25, but it was Wisconsin and Wake Forest that saw the biggest drops. After blowing a 19-point lead, the Badgers fall 11 spots while the Demon Deacons drop 12 spots after turning the ball over 6 times and losing to Navy.
- The non-BCS strikes: BYU busts into the top 10 for the first time this season.
- The Big 12 has four teams in the Top 7, but they begin conference play this week and will inevitably start to knock each other off much as the SEC has done the past two weeks.
- Even though they were victorious over Tennessee, Auburn again slips in the polls as they won another tight game.
What the Voters Have to Say:
- DRang: “The Bayou Bengals (LSU) are tough to beat at home, and if they can get by Florida in The Swamp in two weeks, they have all their remaining significant games at home (Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss)”
- Heisman: “Hate to say ‘I told you so’ Bulldog fans…wait…no I don’t. Out of all the top teams that got beat, Florida has the best chance to rebound and make it to the championship game.”
- Rosenblogger: “Who would have expected Vandy to be leading the SEC East five weeks into the season. Bobby Johnson is pushing for National Coach of the Year and may soon be moving on from Nashville.”
- Shotgun Spratling: “How would your team fare if they lost 6 future-NFL players to injury? I don’t think anyone realizes just how badly Georgia is banged up right now. It’s hard to beat a team of the caliber of Alabama when you are without your best OL, best DT, best DE, best LB (and best defensive player), best FB, and have your star RB and second best LB (and second best defensive player) leave the game with injuries in the second half. Add in having your QB checked for a possible concussion after the game, and at the end of the game, Georgia had at least 6 future-NFL players injured.”
Others receiving votes: Michigan State, Connecticut, Ole Miss, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State, Maryland
Dropped out: Illinois (LW: 19), Clemson (LW: 20), East Carolina (LW: 24)
