The Blue Workhorse Week 4 College Football Top 25
The 7-11 PM (EST) time slot on Saturday had the best collection of games on national television since the midday (3:30-7) slot on September 16, 2006 when #3 Auburn won a 7-3 battle with #6 LSU, #12 Louisville blew out #17 Miami, #11 Michigan put it on Brady Quinn and the #2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and #18 Oregon scored in the last minute to beat #15 Oklahoma.
That September day was a great day to be a college football fan. Along with these four games, there were 3 other games that featured matchups of two teams in the top 25. While there were only two top 25 battles this weekend, both games (LSU/Auburn & Wake Forest/Florida St) were featured in the evening along with a big-time Pac-10/SEC battle between Arizona State and Georgia.
The favorites won in each of those games, but East Carolina and Oregon weren’t as lucky as both were upset.
Another week means another re-evalution, and thus, we give you our new The Blue Workhorse College Football Top 25 after Week 4. Some things to note from this week’s rankings:
- With the favorites at the top of the poll winning, the top 7 teams remaing the same, but next week there is guaranteed to be some top 10 movement after Georgia hosts Alabama.
- After defeating Oregon 37-32, Boise State moves into the rankings for the first time. Tulsa also rejoins the Top 25 after a brief stop earlier this season.
- Biggest gainer: Several teams moved up 3 spots; Clemson jumped up 4 after beating down South Carolina State; but the biggest gainer was Utah with a 6 spot increase after defeating Air Force.
- Biggest loser: The Ducks of Oregon dropped out of the Top 25 from #18 last week, but East Carolina had the biggest fall. The Pirates saw their BCS hopes dashed by NC State and fell 9 spots to #24.
- Auburn falls to #12 after their loss in the waning minutes to LSU. While they didn’t lose, Ohio State and South Florida both slid in our rankings after less-than-stellar efforts.
What the Voters Have to Say:
- DRang: “LSU got a great win on the plains using gutsy play calling and quality quarterback play late. Speaking of QBs: Terrelle Pryor saved the day versus Troy…he’s going to be a special one & South Florida’s Matt Grothe could be the most underrated QB in all the land.”
- Heisman: “It’s pretty obvious Tennessee has become a 2nd tier SEC team, which is still saying something since it is the premier conference in college football, but the Vols will be waiting a long time to experience anything like the 1998 Fiesta Bowl again.”
- Rosenblogger: “Wake Forest keeps creeping up the rankings. They aren’t flashy, but they just continue to win.”
- Shotgun Spratling: “Don’t jump on the Boise State bandwagon just because they defeated Oregon. Oregon started the day with their third string QB only for him to suffer a mild concussion. The Ducks eventually decided to play freshman Darron Thomas, who they were going to redshirt this season. Never put too much stock in beating a team using their 5th string QB out of necessity.
Others receiving votes: Kentucky, Oregon, TCU, Fresno State
Dropped out: Oregon (LW: 18), West Virginia (LW: 20)

I cant believe that Wake Forrest is so high considering Florida States defense shut them down and their offense sucked… but i will say seeing Tulsa makes me very happy!

@ Twink Just like Rosenblogger said about Wake, “They aren’t flashy, but they just continue to win.” Plus, someone has to win the ACC and my vote was going to be for ECU until they blew it against NC State.
Now, ECU is resigned to battling Tulsa in the Conference-USA title game to try to keep the unbeaten Golden Hurricane from a possible BCS bowl.

Very glad to see Tulsa making it onto someones radar. I think they are playing great football. I only wish the Arkansas were a better team so a Tulsa victory could have some teeth.

Can heisman please quit talking about Tennessee? its obvious they are not good. Quit talking about them. geez. you are a better writer than that HEISMANN. Give the fans insight (if you have any to give). So Captain Obvious get an imagination
