The Blue Workhorse Week 3 College Football Top 25
Everyone ballyhooed the USC/Ohio State “Collision in the Coliseum” (yea, naming individual games is dumb) as perhaps the biggest and best game of the year.
Whoops! Yea, not so much. Let’s try Georgia/Florida or Oklahoma/Missouri.
Another whoops involving the Pac-10: The conference went 0-4 against the Mountain West in Week 3 including Arizona State losing any title hopes. The Sun Devils must have been looking ahead to their impending game against Georgia this Saturday. How in the world did they lose to UNLV?
Another week means another re-evalution, and thus, we give you our new The Blue Workhorse College Football Top 25 after Week 3. Some things to note from this week’s rankings:
- The last four teams are all joining the Top 25. Utah and Vanderbilt make their first appearances while Clemson and Virginia Tech both rejoin the rankings.
- Biggest gainer: South Florida gained 6 spots after a come from behind victory over Kansas on Friday night.
- Biggest loser: While the Bulls leaped up 6 spots, Ohio State, who is currently tied at #12 with South Florida, fell 6 spots after being thrashed by USC.
- Speaking of USC, the Trojans gained 2 more points and are only 1 point from being our first unanimous #1.
- After blowouts, the Big 12’s Oklahoma takes over sole possession of the #2 spot while Missouri is now tied for #5 with Georgia who drops another spot after winning 14-7 over South Carolina.
What the Voters Have to Say:
- DRang: Oregon comes in at #17 for me after they beat a game Purdue team in overtime with a backup quarterback. It should be interesting how well the offense performs this weekend without starting QB Justin Roper against the giant killers, Boise State.
- Heisman: You gotta beat the champs to be the champs and thus far LSU has looked solid enough to remain #1.
- Rosenblogger: There is no question that Missouri’s offense can score with playmakers Chase Daniel and Jeremy Maclin, but they still have to prove they can slow down a good offense.
- Shotgun Spratling: Fresno State blew their chance to be a BCS buster. They had opportunities to beat Wisconsin but let it slip right through their hands. In December, when they are 11-1, they will look back and begin kicking themselves.
Others receiving votes: Tulsa, Kentucky, Tennessee, Fresno State, Arizona State, North Carolina, TCU
Dropped out: Arizona State (LW: 12), Fresno State (LW: 21), UCLA (LW: 23), Tulsa (LW: 25)

Come on Heisman…Illinois nearly loses to Louisiana-Lafayette and you move them up to #13?
And you give no love to a better Big 10 school in Penn State?

Mr. Gun,
Honestly, i just throw the Big Ten teams in their as token representation. DRang, being the ultimate Illini fan that he is, I might as well put them up there and throw him a bone. The Big Ten is as big of a joke as the Phillip Fulmer preseason raise.

@Heisman Token representation? Fair enough. That’s the same reason why we allow you to rank teams…token representation of both Tennessee supporters and goldfish eaters.

Again, heisman, I need no bones. I think you have Illinois ranked way to high. There defense is not playing that well, and Juice is turning the ball over too much. Again, they are athletic, but Illinois is not currently the 13th best team in the land. Vote with your mind, not with you heart heisman, haha…

Heisman’s #13 for Illinois is at least arguable. I want to know his “logic” for a #5 Auburn vs. a #8 for UGA. And why does last year’s ranking matter for LSU? This isn’t the sweet science of boxing.
Even worse, how does DRang explain a #9 for THE Ohio State? Based on their performance on the field, rankings of 13 and 17 are even generous.

I believe Ohio St is still a good football team. A top 5 team, definitely not, but when Beanie Wells comes back and Pryor gets more comfortable at QB, I think Ohio St will warrant a 9-11 ranking. Even though they were thoroughly dominated, this could be the most complete USC team yet. Ohio St should still have a good chance to win the weak Big 10, even though I hoped they thrashed even worse in Champaign…

Mr. Publius,
Look no further than Saturday’s performances. While the competition was better for UGA than the the Tigers. I just believe the Tony Franklin system will get traction just in time for tougher conference opponents, and just ask MSU about the defense. Would it be rude of me to ask if your username is a reference to the founding father’s psuedonym for the Federalist players, or their reference to the former Roman consul? Just curious?
September 17th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
@Heisman Well, the Franklin system better gain traction fast as they play in the Tiger Bowl next. LSU’s defense will continue to shut down the Auburn offense, and Aub will lose.
But I guess that would just justify your #1 ranking for the Louisiana version of Tigers.

DRang: Your comment perfectly illustrates the quandry that polls produce. Is the poll a reflection of how a team has performed and is performing or as you indicate, a prediction of what may happen and how the season will end? My belief is in the former - - judge teams based on their performance, not one’s beliefs of what may happen.
Heisman: My pseudonym, Publius, is, indeed, an attempt to display my rightful affection for Jay, Hamilton, and Madison who were honoring the consul Publius Valerius Publicola. Evidently, your history is better than your “token” ability to rank football teams.
