The Blue Workhorse Week 10 College Football Top 25
WOW! That’s about all that could be mustered after that final play of the Texas Tech/Texas ball game. What a game between two teams still with national championship aspirations. The win only makes this week’s Texas Tech/Oklahoma State game even bigger.
Speaking of big games…how about what was, before the season began, supposed to be the game of the year - Georgia/Florida? What a bore. Georgia turned the ball over repetitively and Tim Tebow capitalized every time (5 total TDs: 3 running, 2 passing).
Another week means another re-evaluation, and thus, we give you our new The Blue Workhorse College Football Top 25 after Week 9. Some things to note from this week’s rankings:
- Texas Tech’s win over the Longhorns causes a shakeup in the Top 25 as no team is in the same spot.
- Despite their loss, Georgia still ranks in at #13, the second highest (behind Missouri) 2-loss team.
- New squads: West Virginia has finally returned to the Top 25 after starting at #11 in our preseason poll; Georgia Tech returns; and Maryland and Northwestern both crack the Top 25 for the first time after having received votes previously.
- Biggest gainer: Thanks to a last second field goal, Michigan State moves up 5 spots. Texas Tech also gained 3 huge spots.
- Biggest loser: After being thoroughly beaten by Florida Georgia drops five spots, but it is Tulsa that tumbles the furthest. The Golden Hurricane fall 10 spots after being upset by Arkansas.
- The non-BCS strikes: The non-BCS now have two teams in the Top 10. Right behind #9 Utah is #10 Boise State with #11 TCU lurking just outside.
- Teams by conference: Big XII - 5; SEC - 4; Big 10 - 4; ACC - 4; MWC - 3; Pac 10 - 1; WAC - 1; Big East - 1; C-USA - 1; MAC - 1.
What the Voters Have to Say:
- DRang: “West “by God” Virginia is quietly playing some good football.”
- Heisman: “My prediction for the BCS championship: Florida vs. Oklahoma. Heckuva match up. See if the SEC can make it 3 championships in a row over Oklahoma and ‘Big Game’ Bob Stoops.”
- Rosenblogger: “More credit should go to Penn State defeating a rested, healthy OSU team in The Horseshoe, than Texas Tech beating a worn down Longhorn squad at home. The Red Raiders have plenty of big games left to prove they belong ahead of Penn State.”
- Shotgun Spratling: “You may not have noticed, but USC’s defense might be better than a couple of pro teams.”
Others receiving votes: California, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Kansas
Dropped out: Minnesota (LW: 19), Oregon (LW: 23), Boston College (LW: 24), South Florida (LW: 25)

You know, for once, Heisman you might have made a legitimate argument by saying that Oklahoma could be in the national championship.
If they beat Texas Tech, who could be #1 by that time, beat Oklahoma State, who will be somewhere in the Top 15 more than likely, and beat Missouri in the Big XII championship (if they got into the championship as there would likely be a 3-way tie at the top of the Big 12 South), they would likely be representing the Big 12 in the championship.
But do you really think an undefeated Penn State team will be left out? I think they should be left out (they’ve only beat one good team in Ohio State…of course, Alabama has only beaten one good team as well), but do you think voters are really going to leave out JoePa?

The Ohio State factor overrides the Joe Pa factor. Ohio State’s performances in the past two championship games have ruined any opportunity for Penn State to make the championship game. Voters are more interested in a competitive game than a sentimental favorite participating.

If Ohio State was the undefeated team in Penn State’s position, I could definitely see that, but I think people (as a majority) see Penn State in a different light than the Buckeyes, and I think that all goes back to JoePa being the head coach.
I don’t think they are going to let two teams that each have a loss play in the championship game while leaving out an undefeated team. If Alabama and Texas Tech were to win out, I see Penn State being left out, but 10-1 Florida & 10-1 Big XII won’t square off with an undefeated Nittany Lion squad sitting around.
