The first week of the collegiate football season offered some intrigue as we got our first look at most of the teams and were able to get our first true idea of who could be contenders this season and who was nothing more than a pretender (Clemson, Pittsburgh).

After being able to evaluate some of the teams better than we had in the preseason, we give you our new The Blue Workhorse College Football Top 25 after Week 1. Some things to note from this week’s rankings:

  • After being just outside our Top 25 last week, Alabama springs into the Top 25 and all the way up to 13th after their dismantle of Tommy Bowden’s Clemson Tigers.
  • Joining the rankings for the first time with the Crimson Tide: Penn State, Fresno State & UCLA.
  • Dropping out are Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Oregon State & Tennessee.
  • Wake Forest is our biggest leaper of previously ranked squads, jumping up five spots after their 37-14 defeat of the Big 12’s Baylor.
  • Unlike the AP poll, Clemson still makes our Top 25 after being dominated by Alabama. However, the Tigers fall 13 spots from 9th to 22nd.
  • Our top 7 remained in tact from our preseason poll, but Texas earned just enough points to overtake Auburn for the #8 spot.
  • Despite their losses, DRang still included Clemson (#19) and Virginia Tech (#23) in his personal rankings.
  • Heisman listed 8 separate SEC teams in his Top 25, yet West Virginia, sliding in at #25, is the only Big East squad to make his personal rankings.
  • Rosenblogger remains the only one committed to Florida. The Gators top his rankings and national championship contender list.
  • Is the ACC down? Shotgun Spratling thinks so. The only ACC squad he included in the preseason poll was Clemson, and while he has now added Wake Forest, they both rank in the 20s.
