College Football Predictions: Week 14
My selections last week were pretty good. I only missed two games. Of course, I did miss the big one. I thought Texas Tech would at least put on a better showing in Norman.
This week, however, I’ve got all the winners with a couple of unexpected upsets during Rivalry Week:
(all rankings from are from The Blue Workhorse College Football Top 25)
#3 Oklahoma at #12 Oklahoma State
There will be Bedlam in Stillwater this year. This year’s rivalry game may have the most riding on it in the history of the series. Oklahoma comes into the game with the apparent advantage and fast track in the Big XII South. With a win, the Sooners should be have the advantage in the BCS standings and, therefore, win the tiebreaker between themselves, Texas, and Texas Tech.
However, Oklahoma has yet to win a big game on the road. Winning at Washington, at Baylor, at Kansas State, and at Texas A&M (combined 13-33 record) isn’t really anything to write home about. So I think this will be Oklahoma’s biggest test of the season, besides the one game they’ve already lost.
If Oklahoma State can hang with the Sooners in the first half, they’ll have a chance down the stretch because Oklahoma’s “m.o.” is to jump out big early with their nation’s best 36.1 points per game in the first half. With the Stillwater fans and Pistol Pete behind them and Zac Robinson connecting with Dez Bryant multiple times, the Cowboys stun the nation.
#2 Florida at #20 Florida State
Everyone thinks Florida is just going to roll into Tallahassee and dominate. As Lee Corso would say, “Not so fast my friend.”
Florida State has athletic talent, and probably the best defensive athleticism the Gators have seen this season. The only problem is the Seminoles’ offense just isn’t quite to the caliber needed to knock off the most talented team in the nation. Plus, Florida’s defense is ridiculous. The first team defense hasn’t allowed a touchdown in over a month.
Florida wins, but it could be a close one.
#19 Georgia Tech at #12 Georgia
Georgia has the better athletes. Georgia has more NFL prospects. Georgia plays in the better conference. Georgia has won the last 7 meetings while holding the Yellow Jackets to 17 points or less each time. Mark Richt is 23-0 against non-conference foes at Sanford Stadium. Georgia Tech will win.
How? Simple. The triple option. The barely used offensive system has racked up yards and given defenses fits all season for Georgia Tech. I mean they rumbled for 472 yards rushing last week against an athletic Miami team.
And Georgia has not fared well against the option this season. Just take a look at how Florida and Kentucky were able to carve up yards on the ground (over 400 combined rushing yards) in back-to-back weeks against the Bulldogs earlier this month.
Other Top 25 Picks:
- #1 Alabama could be an upset candidate…if Auburn had any offense at all. The Crimson Tide win The Iron Bowl even if they don’t play well.
- Rivalry? When is the last time Notre Dame won against USC? Try 2001 — the last time #5 USC didn’t have a winning record.
- The #6 Red Raiders regain their swagger a bit as they return to Lubbock and beat Baylor 45-21.
- ***On the blue turf, the #9 Boise State Broncos stay undefeated against an underachieving Fresno State team.
- People thought Kansas was going to be good this season, but they were only good last season because they never played anyone. They lose again this week against another strong team when they face #11 Missouri.
- ***#14 Ball State finishes their regular season undefeated.
- A big game in Corvallis as #15 Oregon State plays rival #21 Oregon in The Civil War with a Rose Bowl trip on the line for the Beavers. The home team has won 10 of the last 11 in this rivalry, and with the OSU defense playing strong against Oregon’s backup QBs, the home team wins again.
- Syracuse is playing better, but #17 Cincinnati won’t have a let down even though they already know they have the BCS berth wrapped up.
- At home, #21 Boston College bucks the ACC trend for the second straight week and defeats Maryland.
***For earlier games this week, these were my predictions.
