Last week’s predictions were almost as good as the week before (my best week yet). I only missed three games, but each were within grasp in the final moments of the game: the Florida State/Georgia Tech back-and-forth battle that FSU should have won (Marcus Sims fumbled into the end zone with 45 seconds left and Tech recovered to save the 3 point win); the Northwestern/Minnesota Big 10 battle (won by NW when Brendan Smith returned an interception in the final 15 seconds); and Tulsa losing to Arkansas.

I did tell you Texas Tech would upset Texas thanks to huge numbers by Graham Harrell. I picked Florida (even against my own Bulldogs). I also predicted the “upsets” of South Florida and Oregon and said Michigan State would “edge” Wisconsin (the Spartans won on a last second field goal).

So what kind of predictions do I have this week? Probably not any good ones, but here they are:

(all rankings from are from The Blue Workhorse College Football Top 25)

#8 Oklahoma State at #2 Texas Tech

What a game last weekend in Lubbock! A matchup of national contenders decided with 0:01 remaining on the clock. What fan (not rooting for Texas) could ask for more?

How about a repeat the next weekend? Sounds good to me. This game between two teams with national championship hopes could be eerily similar to last week’s game. Expect Harrell, Michael Crabtree, Zac Robinson, and Dez Bryant all to put up big numbers in the ‘barely any defense’ Big XII. However, the one player’s performance that could determine the outcome will be Cowboys’ running back Kendall Hunter.

The Red Raiders defensive line played well last week and do again this week containing Hunter. With homefield advantage, the Red Raiders win again.

#1 Alabama at #15 LSU

Some people think LSU has a perfect storm brewing for an upset…I don’t think so. Alabama wins the battle up front nullifying Charles Scott and LSU’s running game, and subsequently, the Crimson Tide win the game.

Other Top 25 Picks:

No time for more expanded thoughts on the top games, so here are the remaining Top 25 Picks:

  • #2 Penn State beats Iowa with their speed.
  • It’s crazy how a few weeks changes things. Just a few weeks ago, #4 Florida was reeling from their loss to Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt was ranked and on top of the world. The Commodores just don’t have the talent to compete with Florida.
  • Baylor’s Robert Griffin finally threw his first INT last week. He’ll throw another this week as #5 Texas wins by 17.
  • Texas A&M has won their last two games. It stops today against #5 Oklahoma.
  • #7 USC actually gets up for a game. They mop Cal.
  • ***#11 TCU has been playing well. #9 Utah hasn’t been. I’ll take TCU.
  • #10 Boise State wins big.
  • A lot of offense in Columbia today. #12 Missouri wins a close shootout.
  • With Kentucky missing key playmakers, even my former student Randall Cobb can’t supply enough offense, #13 Georgia wins by two scores.
  • #25 Northwestern could really propel themselves with a win over #14 Ohio State. This would be the year for them to pull off the upset, but I don’t see it happening.
  • #16 BYU dominates an inferior San Diego State squad.
  • Purdue will give #17 Michigan State some trouble early, but Javon Ringer will run all over the Boilermakers.
  • ***#18 Ball State wins easily.
  • In a key ACC matchup, #21 Georgia Tech travels to #18 North Carolina. Tech has had trouble in the past when playing in Chapel Hill. They have trouble again as the Tar Heels win a tight one.
  • Cincinnati is 6-2 and playing well. They will get out in front of #21 West Virginia. However, the Mountaineers have made it a habit of spotting a team a lead and then reeling off 20+ straight points. They do it again to beat the Bearcats.
  • ***I didn’t even have the #22 Terrapins of Maryland in my Top 25. There’s a reason: they are too inconsistent. They won’t win in Blacksburg.
  • #23 Florida State wins the former Bowden Bowl.

***For Wednesday and Thursday nights games, these were my predictions.
