In the Sunday Sports Selection series, we showcase a sports-related product (gadget, book, film, equipment, etc.) that we have enjoyed and think you may find of interest as well.

In honor of the final home games that were played in historic Yankee Stadium, this week’s Sunday Sports Selection is something that we obtained on our trip to New York City earlier this summer.

While we were in New York for our weekend at Yankee Stadium, we wanted to get souvenirs from our trip as every tourist on a trip wants to do. But we weren’t looking for a “I Heart NY” shirt or a miniture Statue of Liberty. No, the main attraction of our trip was Yankee Stadium, so we were intent on getting souvenirs that were Yankees related.

However, there was a problem: most of our crew are adamently anti-Yankees stemming from affilliations with the Atlanta Braves. Therefore, we didn’t want to get anything that was just Yankees-related. Instead, we wanted to purchase something that could clearly show that we visited during the final season of Yankee Stadium.

While on the subway, we saw an Angels’ fan (the Angels were the visiting team that weekend) with a great t-shirt on. It had the Yankee Stadium final season commemorative logo on the front with the Yankees and Angels logos on the back with the date of the game.

Unfortunately, but fortunately, we couldn’t find the vendor that was selling that specific item. How was that fortunate? Because we didn’t buy that item, we found another vendor on the final day of our trip that was selling the best Yankee Stadium commemorative shirt I have seen.

The shirts says it all. Being a huge fan of baseball history, having the name of the greatest baseball player that will ever play the game on the shirt, along with the commemorative 1923-2008 final season logo and the city, make this the ultimate tribute shirt.

When I saw this design, I immediately snatched up two (one for myself and one for the girlfriend). I actually was so excited about the shirts that I did not pay attention when the vendor handed me an XXL and a medium rather than a large and a medium.

The rest of our crew got the same design, but no one bought any extras that they were willing to trade me, so I tried to go back about a half hour later to switch out the shirt, but the vendor only had XXLs remaining. I was a bit upset, but I ended up deciding to give the shirt to my girlfriend’s mother, who is a Yankees fan and was in attendance in ‘77 for Reggie Jackson’s 3 home run performance.

I thought I might be able to find one online somewhere, maybe on eBay, but apparently the shirt is not an officially licensed shirt. The final season commemorative logo was not supposed to be used on shirts that were not produced by the Yankees and MLB, so these shirts, which were not, are not only awesome but rare and illegal.

Nonetheless, I am not against illegal goods at all times, so if anyone were to know where I could purchase another of the same shirt, please…please use our Contact Us page to let me know.
