In the Sunday Sports Selection series, we showcase a sports-related product (gadget, book, film, equipment, etc.) that we have enjoyed and think you may find of interest as well.

In honor of Independence Day, our selection for this week is a product Major League Baseball showcased the entire holiday weekend.

You may have noticed or even thrown back when flipping to Sportcenter to see teams such as the Oakland A’s or Houston Astros sporting blue baseball caps even though they have no blue in their team colors. What you were seeing was Major League Baseball’s attempt to honor our country.

In coordination with New Era, their official hat sponsor, MLB issued blue (”light navy”) team hats with the teams’ logo containing a United States flag design, and had players wear the hats this weekend. MLB also sold the hats at stadiums throughout the weekend, and the best part is that a portion of the proceeds New Era receives from the “Stars and Stripes Series” will go to WELCOMEBACKVETERANS.ORG (”a foundation to help out returning military soldiers”).

While it is a great product (New Era’s 59/50 collection always is a quality product) for a good cause, I can not necessarily endorse every team’s “Stars and Stripes” edition.

While the flag design works tremendously for logos that have more open space, such as Arizona and Seattle (pictured below), it doesn’t work so well with others. The San Francisco “SF” logo (see below) is hardly recognizable; the White Sox logo doesn’t work because the flag design used for all of the logos goes in the opposite diagonal of the “Sox” logo.

Being a Braves fan and having 10 or 12 Atlanta hats, I was interested in the Braves “Stars and Stripes Series” cap, but I don’t think it looks that great. However, the Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, and Houston hats are all possible options because they have enough open space to make the team’s logo visible while also showcasing the U.S. flag in the design.

And the Florida Marlins logo definitely looks better with the flag design. They could even consider adopting the design if they didn’t perform so poorly in the caps against Colorado this weekend.

Amazon has every team available, and they are always a reliable outlet to purchase from. However, if you are a Lids Club Member, you get a $7 discount on each cap and they also offer free shipping on orders over $50. Check out both places and decide what works best for you.

Regardless, the Stars & Stripes Series from New Era is a great way to display your national pride as well as support your favorite team in the process so pick one up.
