Breaking: Matt Holliday Traded to Oakland A’s
It has been reported by Jon Heyman of SI.com that Colorado Rockies’ outfielder will be wearing green and yellow next season. [Source: SI.com] Buster Olney of ESPN has also confirmed this deal.
Who the Oakland A’s will be giving up has yet to be released, but it does appear that the Rockies & A’s are in the closing stages of a deal that would have Holliday roaming the Oakland Coliseum’s large outfield next season.
More information about the impact and players involved to come later.
UPDATE (3:09 PM): It appears Oakland pitcher Greg Smith will be involved in the deal, and there has been some speculation that Huston Street could be involved since the Rockies are likely to be parting ways with closer Brian Fuentes. [Source: ESPN.com]
UPDATE (5:36 PM): The Athletics are set to exchange starter Greg Smith, closer Huston Street, and stud outfield prospect Carlos Gonzalez (.242, 22 doubles, 4 HR in half a season as a rookie) for Holliday. [Source: San Francisco Chronicle]
Smith and Gonzalez were both top prospects of Arizona prior to last season, but made their debuts with the A’s after being traded to Oakland in the Dan Haren deal.
As a rookie, Smith finished the season 7-16 with a 4.16 ERA, including a 3-4 record and a 2.84 ERA in his first 10 starts. Street has been on the trade market since the beginning of last season, but his stock declined when he lost his closer’s role during the second half of the season.
Combine this deal with the Dan Haren trade last winter: the A’s get Matt Holiday, Brett Anderson (a top LHP prospect), Dana Eveland (9-9, 4.38 ERA in 29 starts), Chris Carter (39 HR in advanced A ball), and Aaron Cunningham (.317 AVG in AA, AAA & 80 MLB at bats) for Dan Haren, Conner Robertson (7 IP last season), and Huston Street.
