2009 has been another outstanding season for the UNC Tar Heels. After a solid regular season, which saw them win the ACC Coastal Division Title, the Tar Heels earned the national number four seed in the NCAA Tournament. UNC was able to breeze through the Chapel Hill Regional, knocking off Dartmouth, Coastal Carolina, and Kansas by a combined score of 31-8. The Tar Heels continued to roll through the Super Regionals, sweeping past in-state rival East Carolina by the scores of 10-1 and 9-3 to earn the programs fourth straight College World Series appearance.

The UNC program is no longer satisfied with making it to Omaha, they have their expectations set on coming back to Chapel Hill with the title. Coach Fox’s club is certainly equipped to do so, with a roster that includes 6 players that were selected in the top 6 rounds of the MLB Amateur Draft.

Florida nearly let the losses carry over to their performance in the Gainesville Regional when they needed five runs in the final two innings to rally to beat Bethune-Cookman in the opener. It took a two-run single by Teddy Foster to dig Florida out of what had been a 7-5 deficit entering the bottom of the ninth inning. The #8 national seed then breezed by in-state rival Miami twice (8-2, 16-5) to advance to the Super Regionals.

North Carolina finished 19-10 in the ACC winning the Coastal Division but didn’t fare well at the end of the season or in the ACC tournament finishing just 5-5 over their final 10 games. They didn’t let that deter them in the Chapel Hill Regional as they swept through barely breaking a sweat winning over Dartmouth (5-2), Coastal Carolina (14-5), and Kansas (12-1).

However, as the SEC Tournament’s #3 seed they were sent home early after being ousted in two games. Ole Miss made sure the same did not happen when they hosted the Oxford Regional winning easily over Monmouth (8-1) and Western Kentucky (7-4) in their first two games. After leading 9-3 in the Regional finals, the Rebels watched as Western Kentucky took a dramatic victory hitting 3 home runs and scoring 7 runs in the final two innings, inlcuding 6 runs off closer Jake Morgan before he was pulled without recording an out. But in Monday’s elimination game, Drew Pomeranz was nearly unhittable throwing a complete game two-hitter on only two days rest! He struck out 16 to tie an Ole Miss record and send the Rebelsto the Supers.
