Baton Rouge Super Regional

LSU (49-16) vs. Rice (43-16)

Louisiana State Tigers -
Road to the Super Regional: The LSU Tigers earned the number 3 national seed following a stellar season, which included capturing the SEC regular season and tournament titles. In the conference tournament, the Bayou Bengals fought back from an opening round loss to Vanderbilt to win the SEC tourney. LSU was able to make it to the Super Regionals on ESPN due to a sweep through the hosted Baton Rouge Regional over the likes of Southern, Baylor and Minnesota with their only real test coming when the Tigers needed a 10th inning Austin Nola RBI single to beat Baylor 3-2.

College Baseball Regional Previews: Fort Worth, TX

Fort Worth Regional

1. Texas Christian Horned Frogs (36-16) vs 4. Wright State Raiders (33-28)
2. Oregon State Beavers (35-17) vs 3. Texas A&M Aggies (36-22)

Winner to take on champion of Austin Regional.

One of the three regionals hosted by the lone star state can be found at the home of the Horned Frogs of TCU. As the host of the regional with a record of 36-16, TCU hopes their balanced attack will aid their escape to next week’s Super Regional where they could potentially face off with in-state rival Texas.

Standing in the way of the TCU advance are the arms of Texas A&M and Oregon State, and the big bats of Wright State. Although TCU should advance just as their #1 overall seed counterpart, TCU will have a much tougher test in the initial round.

College Baseball Regional Previews: Austin, TX

Austin Regional

1. Texas Longhorns (41-13-1) vs 4. Army Black Knights (34-19)
2. Texas State Bobcats (41-15) vs 3. Boston College Eagles (33-24)

Winner to take on champion of Fort Worth Regional.

It is easy to call the Longhorns the favorite in this regional being the #1 overall seed in this year’s tournament. However, The Longhorns will not have a cakewalk to advance to the super regional next week matched up with some hard hitting clubs with the likes of Boston College, Army, and in-state rival Texas State.

This will be quite to contradiction to the pitching laden Longhorn baseball team. Despite the contrast in styles that might give the favored host some minimal problems as the Longhorns should still be on the diamond next weekend at home again.

What Would Rudy Do?

This being a sports blog, the bulk of my opinions tend to mix a political tidbit with a dousing of sports world analysis. However, today’s post will be the reciprocal of that formula.

President Obama’s pending commencement address at the University of Notre Dame this afternoon has caused much turmoil throughout the American Catholic Church and my family. As a proud brother of one of those receiving a diploma at today’s celebration, I pause and ask what would Rudy do?

Give the Kid a Chance

John Adams has solidified his position as the sports journalism community’s biggest imbecile.

Luckily, he is buried in the small market of Knoxville where only orange-colored-glasses wearing readers are subjected to his absurdity. Adams latest display of ignorance and arrogance is his recent article on Tennessee’s signing of Knoxville Catholic High School prep standout Daniel Hood. According to Adams, if Lane Kiffin wants to maintain any credibility he should automatically disqualify Hood from any oppotunity at a football scholarship because of his troubled past so that Kiffin distances himself from the off the field woes of the Phillip Fulmer era.

And frankly, Adams is about as qualified to comment on this situation as Barack Obama is to run a car company.

Bail out the Raiders!

This is about the bailout for the fans of the Oakland Raiders.

The NFL Draft this past weekend is undeniable proof, if we actually needed any more, that there is a dire need for an immediate infusion of competency in the front office before the Raiders cross the point of no return.

2009 Minnesota Twins Preview

The Blue Workhorse 2009 Outlook:
Last season, the Twins unloaded their starting shortstop, their Gold Glove centerfielder, and three starters — including one of the best pitchers in the league and last season’s ALCS MVP — during the offseason…and still came only a game shy of the postseason.

This offseason, the Twins uncharacteristically made an addition. In adding veteran third baseman, the Twins hope to shore up the infield and add some pop to a lineup that ranked last in the American League in home runs last season.

2009 Los Angeles Dodgers Preview

The Blue Workhorse 2009 Outlook:
Solid is the best word used to describe the Dodgers.

An above average offense (likely the best in the National League) with speed and power is what the Dodgers have constructed, and they have an above average, seasoned manger steering the boat.
