BREAKING NEWS: Favre Signs With Falcons
After finally being released, Brett Favre has signed with the team that originally drafted him.
In an unthinkable move, the Green Bay Packers have granted Brett Favre his release — a move general manager Ted Thompson just recently claimed the team would not do. Why the change of heart from the organization?
The Packers agreed to conditionally release Favre. The iron man quarterback’s release from the team he has spent 16 years with was contingent upon conditions set forth by Green Bay.
The main condition of the release was the list of possible destinations for Favre. The list included 15 teams, none of which had a winning record last season. Not included were any of Green Bay’s NFC North rivals or teams that would be considered favorites to compete for the NFC title this season.
Of the 15 teams, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and St. Louis each have Pro Bowl quarterbacks and have displayed no interest in the future Hall of Famer.
Favre said he eliminated 8 other teams (Baltimore, Buffalo, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Miami, New York Jets, and Oakland) because he wanted to stay in the NFC (possibly because he did not want to be overshadowed by other high profile quarterbacks in the AFC).
The final choice for Favre came down to Arizona, Atlanta, and San Francisco. Ultimately, Favre said his decision came down to staying in the NFC and east of the Mississippi (although Arizona did not make him an offer). However, the luscious courting done by Falcons’ owner Arthur Blank probably didn’t hurt matters too much:
“I was reluctant to return to Atlanta at first because of the way I felt I was treated the first time I was here, but Mr. Blank really has done me well since he has taken over the franchise, and he convinced me I would look good in red.”
Blank also opened up the wallet, which never hurts. According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Favre signed a 1-year contract for $14.75 million.
While Atlanta is not the first destination you would think of Favre heading to, the Falcons are hoping with Favre shoring up all the QB issues they have had since Michael Vick’s conviction, they can move back into contention for the NFC South division title. With the addition of Michael Turner and Favre in the backfield, the Falcons have weaponry that should boost their anemic offense that was the 4th worst in scoring last season.
Atlanta is also hoping Favre can help tutor and assist in the development of 3rd overall pick, Matt Ryan. This will eliminate the pressure on Ryan this upcoming season as he will now have an opportunity to learn and mature under the greatest quarterback of our era. Ryan was unavailable for comment.
There will, however, be a weird occurrence in week 5 when Favre and the Falcons will travel to Lambeau Field.
“It’ll definitely be a unique experience,” Favre said, “but we have 4 other regular season games to be concerned with before we get to that.”

Well, it is was a move the Packers had to make, and as a Cheesehead, I was not one who supported Favre’s return to the team. I think he is a spoiled brat who just did not know what to do with himself, and thus this huge scene to come back to football. You know nothing would make me happier than to watch the Packers wipe the Falcons out at that game, Favre can throw some of his infamous interceptions to his old teammates in fact.

He has lost his everlasting mind.
I grew up living in GA as a Falcons fan and eventually ended up moving to Wisconsin. It’s impossible to live in WI and not have love for the Packers. I have much love for both teams. With that said, it’s going to be hard routing for the Falcons now.

I have always followed Favre’s career. I was never really a Packers fan (OK, I went for them during the Super Bowl), but Favre was always the guy I wanted to see. (I’m a Chiefs fan)
Anyway, this is going to be weird. I didn’t even know Favre got permission from the Packers to get FA, I thought they declined that. Atlanta is very lucky…
