10/8 Wednesday Workhorse Links

Lots of great stuff this week from fantasy baseball awards to college football freshman to a sports blogger trying out for a professional team to a ridiculous hockey play:

* Need a Halloween costume? - Epic Carnival gives you the top ten sports related Halloween costumes of 2008. I still think the idea I came up with last year is the best (just check in the comments of the story).
* GameDay Classic Signage - Busted Coverage has the 20 all-time best ESPN College Gameday signs. The ones mentioned in the comments are classic as well.
* Best GameDay Sign. Ever. - From the Auburn/LSU game last month.

No College Football Observations This Week

Unfortunately, for anyone that was looking forward to our college football observations for Week 6, I was unable to make any observations this week.

I acquiesed the girlfriend and agreed to her last minute decision to go to her cousin’s wedding. The wedding ceremony was supposed to start at 5 PM, but it was being held in Charleston, South Carolina, which is a 5+ hour drive from home.

10/1 Wednesday Workhorse Links

It’s back. After it appeared that everyone enjoyed the inaugural edition, the Wednesday Workhorse Links (as it will be known until someone helps supply a better name) is back again.

Some great articles that you should check out that I haven’t necessarily had time to write anything about the past two weeks:

* We gave an NFL player his official nickname!! - Falcons’ fullback Ovie Mughelli had a contest on YardBarker because Braylon Edwards said he needed a nickname, and our nickname Ovie “The Drill” Mughelli was selected!

Wednesday Workhorse Links

I’ve been reading a lot of good articles as of late and haven’t exactly found enough time to write about them myself. With that being said, I still think these articles are just too good to go by without me passing them along.

Therefore, here is the inaugural edition of the Wednesday Workhorse Links (yea, I need a new name, but that’s the best spur of the moment creativity I currently have):

Planning Your Sports Vacation - Part 3: A Guide

You’ve chosen where to go, you’ve got the crew together. Now, before you go hunting for the tickets or sleeping arrangements, take a moment to ponder upon this topic: A Guide.

Having prior knowledge about the city which you are traveling to can greatly enhance your trip. Knowing where to go and the best route to get there will not only keep you from getting lost but also save you time that will allow you to do more.

It’s great if someone in your group of invitees has this knowledge. But don’t settle for inviting someone along just because they may know a little more about the city than you and your crew! There are other options.

What are some of the other viable options? Try some of these ideas:

Sunday Sports Selections: StatBeast

In the Sunday Sports Selection series, we showcase a sports-related product (gadget, book, film, equipment, etc.) that we have enjoyed and think you may find of interest as well.

I receive e-mails occasionally from sports companies that are either interested in advertisements or having us promote their products or web site. I typically will at least give the company or web site a look over to determine if they have anything that is of interest for our web site or our readers.

Earlier today, I received an e-mail from a representative of a company by the name of StatBeast (www.statbeast.com).

According to their web site, StatBeast, founded in February of last year, is “The World Leader in Online Sports Statistics.” They are a relatively new web site that offers interactive stat content for web sites and blogs. They offer a variety of widgets and other data tools, which are readily available for usage.

When Being Too Good Sucks…at Age 9

Imagine if our future president does his job well. What if by 2010 he eliminated poverty, the economy boomed, and every nation in the world decided to be nice…and because of all that, the President was impeached. Told he could no longer be the President because he did his job too well.

If that ever happened, President McCain or Obama could find solace in calling up Jericho Scott, who would then be 11 years old.

Scott, after all, is facing the same dilemma right now. No, Scott is not the President, but the 9-year-old has been removed from his “job” because he does it too well.

“Nine-year-old Jericho Scott is a good baseball player — too good, it turns out.” (AP - John Cristoffersen)

Too Young to Compete?

I’m not much on gymnastics, but I was able to catch some of the women’s competition from Beijing. It was apparent the Chinese and the American teams were the class of the female field. On the day of the competition, the Chinese women performed best and were the deserving recipients of the team All-Around gold.

A few days after the completion of the meet, rumors began spreading about the ages of some of the Chinese gymnasts, claiming some may be too young to be eligible to compete in the Olympics. This concept made absolutely no sense to me, because I always believed the Olympics are designed to determine who the best athletes in the World are. If a 14-year-old girl can put together a better floor routine than anyone else in the world, she deserves to be the gold medalist.

I will never be convinced that putting a 14-year-old athlete in an event open to the best athletes of any age in the world is giving someone an unfair advantage.
